Children travelling to and from school in Coventry are set to benefit from safer routes as the city’s School Streets programme moves into its next phase.
The scheme, which reduces vehicle access around schools during key times, has been running in trial areas for the past year. Now, four pilot locations – near Ravensdale, Southfields, Stanton Bridge, and Cardinal Wiseman schools – will become permanent.
The programme will also be extended to include:
- Holbrook Primary School (Gateside Road and Crown Green)
- Limbrick Wood Primary School (Bush Close)
- Aldermoor Farm Primary School (Pinley Fields)
The initiative is designed to cut congestion, create safer conditions for children and families, and support walking, cycling, and wheeling. The new areas will include updated Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) and camera enforcement.
Work on the additional zones will begin next April, following consultation later this year and confirmation of final plans in 2025. Funding is being provided through Coventry City Council’s Active Travel Fund.
Councillor Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said:
“Our School Streets initiative is making a real difference to families across Coventry.
“We’ve seen safer, healthier school environments, thanks to fewer cars and more children walking, cycling, or wheeling. With phase two sites now set to become permanent and phase three on the way, we’re committed to doing all we can to create safer, calmer streets for all.”
The School Streets programme is a central part of Coventry’s wider commitment to encourage active travel, reduce air pollution, and make neighbourhoods more welcoming for residents. Locals are encouraged to take part in consultations to help guide future expansion.
