Recycled Kerbing System Receives Updated National Approval, Supporting Low-Carbon Highway Design

A recycled plastic kerbing solution has achieved a key regulatory update, strengthening its position within the UK’s shift towards lower-carbon highway construction materials.

Duraproducts has confirmed that its Durakerb system has been awarded refreshed BBA HAPAS certification, allowing the recycled polymer kerb to be specified for use across UK highways in line with current national standards.

The approval comes in parallel with revisions to National Highways’ Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW), which now formally includes polymer kerbs within its specification framework. Together, these updates represent a meaningful step forward in enabling wider adoption of sustainable materials across both strategic and local road networks.

While Durakerb has been certified under BBA HAPAS since 2008, the latest reassessment brings the product in line with updated CC/207 requirements. This alignment provides additional confidence that recycled polymer kerbs meet the durability, safety and performance benchmarks expected on modern infrastructure schemes.

By securing updated certification alongside inclusion in national specification documents, the product is expected to become easier to procure and specify. For local authorities, consultants and contractors, this reduces the need for bespoke approvals or additional testing on individual schemes, helping to streamline delivery processes.

The development reflects the wider direction of the highways sector, where increasing emphasis is being placed on reducing embodied carbon and improving resource efficiency. Traditional kerbing materials have typically relied on energy-intensive production methods, prompting growing interest in alternatives that support circular economy principles.

Recycled polymer kerbs such as Durakerb are being positioned as a practical option for balancing sustainability goals with engineering performance requirements. The latest certification provides independent validation of long-term durability and suitability for use in demanding highways environments.

Duraproducts founder Phil Sutton described the update as an important milestone for the wider adoption of recycled materials in infrastructure delivery, particularly as specification frameworks evolve to support more sustainable construction practices.

The move is expected to be welcomed across the sector, particularly by organisations seeking proven, standards-compliant ways to reduce environmental impact without compromising asset performance.
