Moto Hospitality has announced plans to significantly expand electric vehicle charging facilities across its motorway service areas, including a major increase in infrastructure for electric freight vehicles.
The company says it intends to increase the number of EV charging bays at its locations by four times over the coming years.
Moto currently operates more than 60 motorway service stations across the UK, providing fuel, food, retail and rest facilities for road users. In recent years, the company has also become a major provider of rapid charging infrastructure for electric vehicles travelling long distances.
Over the past five years, Moto has installed more than 1,000 ultra-rapid charging bays focused mainly on passenger EVs. The operator now plans to dramatically expand this network for both cars and electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs).
The expansion forms part of a wider £500 million investment programme across the company’s national estate. Moto said recent long-term lease extensions at more than 10 service stations have provided the confidence needed to move forward with large-scale redevelopment and energy infrastructure upgrades.
Moto CEO Ken McMeikan said: “Securing long term lease extensions at 10 of our key sites allows us to unlock our planned £500 million investment programme, [having] already invested more than £300 million over the past five years.”
eHGV charging superhubs planned
Alongside expanded passenger EV charging, Moto is also developing plans for 15 dedicated eHGV superhub sites.
Each location is expected to feature more than 100 charging bays for electric trucks and will be positioned along important freight routes to support the transition towards zero-emission logistics.
The company has already secured planning approval for new developments in Swindon and at a specialist truck stop in Wrotham, Kent.
Moto also confirmed it is upgrading existing HGV parking facilities, including enhancements to security and driver welfare amenities.
Elliot Shaw of National Highways said: “We’re proud to have secured this long-term lease agreement with Moto, enabling us to further enhance these vital services that help drivers rest, recharge, and stay safe. This deal shows our continued commitment to managing public assets wisely and making sure they benefit everyone. It also paves the way for important upgrades, such as expanded electric vehicle charging and HGV driver facilities, supporting our vision for a cleaner, greener transport network.”
