Miles Macadam has collaborated with Stockport Council to deliver an innovative, carbon-neutral road resurfacing project. Certified by Carbon Footprint Ltd, the scheme supports the council’s ambitious environmental targets by incorporating Miles Macadam’s advanced low-carbon surfacing technology.

As part of the company’s broader sustainability commitment, a tree planting initiative was also undertaken within the borough to symbolise the project’s success and promote continued sustainable development in the local community.

Procured through LCRIG’s Project Amber Framework, the scheme showcases the value of sustainable infrastructure solutions in helping local authorities meet their climate objectives.

For Robins Lane, a heavily tree-lined route, the council selected the Milepave™ solution. This fully sealed surface treatment prevents water penetration, reduces organic material build-up, and improves safety by limiting the development of slippery conditions.

The scheme delivered several key environmental benefits:

  • 1,878m² of Milepave™ installed
  • 27.2 tonnes less aggregate used
  • 3.5 tonnes less bitumen consumed
  • 5.40 tCO₂e savings compared to traditional materials

An article published on Stockport Council’s website quoted Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Parks, and Leisure Services, who stated:
“Stockport Council is committed to making our roads safer and more sustainable. By using innovative, low-carbon materials like Milepave™, we are reducing our environmental impact while delivering high-quality infrastructure for our residents. Under our Climate Action Now plan, we’ll continue to reduce the council’s carbon footprint, achieving net zero by 2030 for council operations. This scheme further demonstrates our dedication to achieving our ambitious climate goals.”

Miles Macadam expressed pride in supporting this pioneering initiative and looks forward to continuing its collaboration with Stockport Council, providing reduced-carbon materials for future sustainable infrastructure projects.

Stories, not spreadsheets: the sustainability event aimed at the people who keep places running

A new UKGBC leadership event puts communication at the centre of sustainability delivery. For councils and contractors, the lesson is blunt: good engineering still needs a coherent answer to what changes, who benefits, and why the disruption is worth it.

Britain’s roads were built for a climate that no longer exists

Heat lingers longer. Rain arrives harder. And the network itself is older than the weather now testing it. Resilience has stopped being a conference theme and become a maintenance problem.

Thousands of streetlights, one quiet transformation across Warrington and Liverpool

A fresh push on LED streetlights in Warrington and Liverpool points to a quieter kind of road upgrade: less power, lower maintenance and a different night-time streetscape for drivers and residents.

National Highways – 650,000kWh a year: inside the solar retrofit of 16 working highway depots

National Highways has fitted 825kW of solar, 760kWh of battery storage and 18 heat pumps across 16 operational sites, all while maintenance crews kept working. The programme will generate nearly 650,000kWh of renewable electricity annually.
